There are pet and odor stains that come with the transition into the incontinence issue. Many families go through several different options to deal with these two problems. In dealing with the transition myself I know I went through several options before I found a pattern that worked, kept the house clean, and killed any possible odor that the pets may have left behind. A product that has been a lifesaver for me has been Kids N Pets.

The Advantages of Kids N Pets

Kids N Pets can be purchased from most any store including online at Amazon. The solution is clear which was a huge issue for me. I did not want the solution to dye or stain the carpet further than the pet had already done. It comes in a spray, squirt bottle, and gallon carton forms. This was a real advantage to the product. We could have the large container of refills, squirt bottle for smaller stains and stains that required more liquid, and the spray for quick touch ups.

Another advantage to using the Kids N Pets brand was that it could be used in the steam cleaner. It didn’t seem to matter if it was a quick clean up or if the solution needed to soak in for several minutes. Either way it worked well when combined with the steam cleaner. Ideally the solution is supposed to soak in overnight and dry naturally. This is not something that is practical for many pet owners so knowing that it could be used and cleaned up within an hour and still work effectively was a huge plus in using the product. The cost for the product was well worth it and fell between the higher end product prices and lower end product prices without sacrificing quality.

The Disadvantages of Kids N Pets

The only problem that I really ran into was finding it locally. It is not a brand that seems to be carried at Petsmart, which is our local store. I have been able to find it at Walmart and Target on occasion but it is hit or miss. I have found that the best way to stay stocked up on Kids N Pets is to order it online and have it delivered. I did have to pay a shipping and handling fee but always ordered in bulk so even that cost did not really sway my choice to use the product or not.

The Final Conclusion on Kids N Pets

Overall the Kids N Pets brand is one that can be trusted to get the job done. That in and of itself is a quality that really makes the difference. If the product works and works well many people, including myself, are willing to pay a bit more. It does not pose the same issues as many other cleaning products on the market, leaves a fresh scent behind, and does not leave a film or cause issues with the carpet.

Kids and Pets Cleaners can be found at Amazon

Volunteer Your Time

Even if you only have an hour or two of time this can be really helpful. During this time you can walk and play with the animals, which helps with their socialization skills. The love you show these animals may be the first time they have ever known love at all.

Donated Toys Your Animal No Longer Wants

Whenever your pet no longer wants a gently used toy, ball or stuffed animal, take it to your local animal shelter. They rarely have the money to purchase such luxuries since food, medication and shelter have to be their first concern. However, these toys can bring great joy to those animals that have to spend a lot of time locked up in a cage everyday.

Donate Food And Treats

Shelters always need food. While it may not be possible to organize a food drive for your local shelter due to there being so many hungry people in the world today, anything you do here would be appreciated more than you could imagine. Try picking up some food that the finicky animals in your neighborhood won’t eat or run an ad saying that you are collecting food for your local animal shelter. Even if the food is open you may be surprised to find that your local shelter will still take it.

Thinking Ahead

These are just some of the many ways in which you can help your local animal shelter. So, while you may not be able to bring home every cute pet you see, you should know that you can touch their lives in one of these great ways.

They become part of the family. When those special members of the family get older, however, they can start to exhibit signs that their bodies are not the same as the used to be. One of the biggest issues that pets face is incontinence on varying levels. Several problems that need to be met head on by owners begin to arise when dealing with the incontinent pet. Many owners begin to feel that there are no options. This is not the case. In fact there are several options that are available to owners of incontinent pets including indoor bathroom options, cleaning options, and odor removal options that leave the pet and family with a very well maintained quality of life.

Bathroom Options for Incontinent Pets

The first step in dealing with an older incontinent pet is to tackle the bathroom issue. Even if the pet is taken out regularly that will more than likely not be enough. Most incontinent pets will need some sort of back up plan in the house. For this there are several options on the market that owners may not consider. One of them is the use of puppy training pads. These pads can be purchased in reusable, washable, cost effective forms and can be reused over and over again. Many home health companies carry these pads for around $20 per four. Depending on the size and level of incontinence, several pads may be needed. Other options include indoor AstroTurf with removable trays for easy cleanup and even placing the pet in an area that can be mopped up easily. There are medications for the incontinence, however, many of these medications require specific dosages and do not necessarily help the issue.

Cleaning Options for Incontinent Pets

The best cleaning options for incontinent pets are the quick, easy, and pet friendly variety. There are several cleaning options available but the best options are a combination of steam cleaning and pet and odor removers. Two of the most well known cleaners for pet and odor removal are Kids N Pets and Nature’s Miracle. Both of the these cleaners are concentrated and handle both stains and odors in one treatment. They are specially formulated to be safe for both pets and children so there is no real concern of either being exposed to them. When used in conjunction with a steam cleaner, either of these two products will clean carpet and leave behind a fresh scent that does not just mask odor but completely removes it.

Maintaining and providing a high quality of life for an incontinent pet should be no different from caring for that pet prior to the illnesses’ onset. With the many options available to pet owners the issue comes more in the transition and addition of certain items rather than a full life change. With the proper planning and upkeep both pets and families can enjoy the same quality of life and atmosphere as they have the entire time.

While each cat is unique, the average Maine Coon is like a small child in a fur suit.

The personality, temperament, and habits of the Maine Coon set him apart from other breeds and mixed breeds. The aloofness and independence often present in other cats do not apply to the Maine Coone. Maine Coons love to hang out with their owners. They can be attention-seeking and clingy. Do not be surprised if your new Maine Coone is like a little empath, able to sense if you are sad, ill, or have had a difficult day. He loves his owner, and shows it.

An oddity common to Maine Coons is their fascination with water. Your new cat may jump on the sink when he hears the faucet running, and begin playing in the stream of water. This unusual trait is why some people compare the Maine Coone to raccoons. If you are planning to bring one into your home, it is a good idea to teach your family to keep the toilet seat closed. Otherwise, he may decide the toilet is an excellent place to play.

The Maine Coon’s appearance is appealing. The ruff around his neck, the long bushy tail, and his thick, soft fur make him one of the most beautiful cat breeds. However, there is one feature that sets him apart from most other long-haired breeds. Even throughout the seasonal changes, the Maine Coon sheds very little. This is a bonus if you love long-haired cats but do not enjoy shedding on your furniture.

I have owned cats throughout my lifetime. Three, including my current roommate, have been Maine Coons. They do not seem to be merely a different breed– they seem to be an entirely different species. A comment I often heard about one was “He does not act like any cat I’ve ever seen… he acts… almost human…!”

The Maine Coon is quiet, clean, and dignified, but he also loves to play. A huge, full-grown Maine Coon will run and tackle a toy as if he is a kitten. He is the perfect choice for singles, adults, and especially families with children.

Horse ownership can be one of the most rewarding decisions you ever make, but it also requires a substantial financial commitment. It is often said that the actual purchase of your horse is the least expensive aspect, and that most of the money required will go towards boarding costs, training, veterinary bills and feed. If you’re serious about turning your dream of owning a horse into reality, make sure that you are aware of all the costs involved and take measures to ensure that your income level can bear the increased expenses. Also, see if there are any methods that will allow you to minimize the cost of your horse’s expenses.

For example, many boarding stables will offer discounted rates in exchange for help around the barn. Although cleaning out horse stalls is far from a glamorous task, if you can prove that you’re dedicated, the stable owners may be willing to offer you more flexible boarding fees.

Also, if your horse is used to a specific type of feed, you might be able to get coupons from the manufacturer, especially if you’re a regular buyer. If there are any feed stores in your town that advertise their offerings, make a habit of browsing their website or advertising circulars regularly so you’ll know as soon as your feed of choice goes on sale.

Finally, consider buying used supplies for your equine companion. Although it is best to buy certain items like brushes and buckets new to prevent the possible spread of diseases from other horses, other needs such as halters, blankets and lead ropes are often available for a reasonable price from local tack shops. However, before making a purchase, inspect the item for any signs of wear that may present a safety hazard for you or your horse.

In recent times, there has been a heightened interest in using all-natural products in the home. In order to keep up with the trend, several pet suppliers now offer all-natural cat litter products that are also friendly to the environment. Feline Pine is one such option for cat owners, and its website mentions that it is currently the best selling brand in the United States.

I have been using it for my cat for the past six months or so. I really like that the pine has a pleasant scent that smells very “earthy”. It does a good job of masking the smell that most indoor cat owners must learn to live with. There are two versions of the Feline Pine litter on the market. The traditional blend is made up of rounded pellets that dissolve to signify that it’s time to change the litter. The other option is a mixture that is formulated for easy scooping, much like other cat litters that you might already be using. I use a combination of both types for my cat, because she is very picky and didn’t like using the litter box when it only contained the pelleted version. I love using Feline Pine litter and am glad I decided to switch from my usual brand. Although it’s slightly more expensive than most other choices, to me, it’s worth the extra cost.

Remember the instructional email that was forwarded all over the Internet?

Place pill at back of cat’s tongue. Clean scratches on your forearm with soap and water and apply bandage. Retrieve pill from under couch. Remove cat from curtain rod. Repeat.

Drug manufacturers realized years ago that adding flavors to medications made it easier for parents to administer medications to their children. It was only a matter of time before manufacturers realized the need for flavored pet meds.

Today, pet owners can breathe a sigh of relief as more pet medications are offered in a flavored version. They are simple, easy to administer-they’re wonderful!

Until you drop the bottle.

It is when you see those tasty little treats scatter across the floor, and your ravenous Rottweiler scarfing them up that your heart stops.

Such was the case for Lillie, a twelve year old Labrador who took Levothyroxine for a low thyroid. Lillie was always good about taking her medications if wrapped in something yummy, but her owner opted for the flavored medication to cut out unnecessary calories.

It happened so quickly. The bottle slipped, the meds hit the floor and scattered, and Lillie started munching away as her owner desperately tried to get to the pills before she could consume any more.

Lillie was lucky. She ingested only enough to keep her and her owner awake most of the night, but not enough to cause serious injury. But with some medication such as NSAIDS, even a few are enough to cause serious injury, or even death.

While flavored meds are certainly a welcome convenience, using them comes with certain risks. When using flavored medications, as with any medication, precautions should taken:

Always keep medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Open and dispense medication over a sink or a bowl, so that in the event the bottle slips, the pills or liquid will not end up on the floor where your pet can get to it before you do.

In the event of accidental overdose, contact your Veterinarian or Poison Control Center immediately.

With the proper care and handling, flavored pet medications can make med time easier and less traumatic for your pets and you!

Every dog owner recognizes the importance of training their pet. From a very early age, dogs, like humans, learn both good and bad habits which will stay with them for the rest of their lives. This being the case, it is very important to choose the right training school to use, as bad experiences early on can have a lifelong effect on your puppy. Poorly run classes can have the exact opposite effect to that which is actually desired, causing behavioral problems which can be difficult to combat and replace.

At what age should the training start? Well, it is best to start training your puppy at 12 weeks, when your puppy is still young and eager to learn. But make sure that they have had all the correct vaccinations, and that it is safe to take them out and about with other dogs.

How should you go about choosing a training school? It is best to take into consideration the recommendations of others, so that you do not have to experience all of the bad training schools yourself. Ask your vet, and get the opinions of other friends who own dogs themselves. Observe these training classes initially and note down any of your thoughts and impressions of them.

What should you look for in a training school? Firstly, both dogs and owners should appear happy and relaxed during the class, there should be minimal tension and frustration. The trainers should be watching the handlers at all times, showing personal interest and even offering individual help if any is needed.

The class should take place at an appropriate venue, one with enough space so that conditions are not cramped. It should also be possible for shyer dogs to have some time away from the class if they begin to feel overwhelmed or scared by the situation at any time.

The class should consist of an appropriate number of animals. Smaller numbers are better, as it allows for individual help to be offered and makes it easier to keep the class calm and under control at all times. Still, there should be enough puppies there so that there is a chance to socialize well, preferably with more than 2 or 3.

All dogs taking part in the class should be of a similar age and level of development. This makes it easier for the trainer to work with the group, as all are at a similar stage of learning.

Harsh methods, such as pulling sharply at the chain or yanking at the puppy, should be avoided at all costs. Employing these methods can make puppies fearful and stunts learning. It also makes it more difficult for you to develop a warm relationship with your puppy.

Choosing the right training school to go to with your puppy is definitely vital. At these places, your dog will learn obedience and manners, as well as having the opportunity to socialize well with other puppies of a similar age. And, you never know, you might make some friends too!

Choosing a dog can be a very exciting time for all involved, yet it is vital for you to get it right. There are a few things which you and your family must consider before buying a dog, if you are to make the right match and avoid problems later on.

It is imperative that you avoid an impulse buy, as this can lead to heartache and problems for both you and your dog.

Before getting a dog, you must take a look at your budget. It can cost well over $1,000 per year for very basic care, not including things such as vet fees for illness or injury. It is also important to consider your budget when choosing a particular breed. For example, bigger dogs eat more food and need more medication, so the costs for them are higher than for smaller dogs.

One of the most important things to think about is your lifestyle and housing situations. Yard size must be carefully and honestly considered, as larger breeds obviously need more space than smaller ones. Fencing around your property must be secure to prevent them getting out.

Your free time must be carefully reviewed, as time must be devoted to the exercising and taking care of the puppy. In addition, some breeds, such as herding breeds, have more energy and need more exercise than others. For the most part, dogs tend not to run around and exercise themselves, that is your responsibility as an owner. Do you work? Dogs are generally pack animals and not designed to be solitary creatures. If they are left on their own a lot, this can cause bad behavior such as excessive barking, digging and escaping.

Do you have time and money for regular clipping and general grooming? If not, it is best to choose a more low maintenance breed with shorter coat. If you have children, that is also something to consider. Some big breeds too boisterous and can knock children over. Also, some toy breeds can be more susceptible to injury, and younger children may play rough with them, dropping them, for example.

One thing to consider is whether you would like a purebred or a mutt. Purebreds tend to be more predictable with regards to things such as size and temperament. Mutts of unknown parentage can be a bit of a gamble, but they can also make good pets. You may also choose to adopt an older dog, rather than puppy to avoid hard work of raising a young animal. But make sure that the dog has been raised well. Also, some breeds are prone to hereditary health issues, like orthopedic problems or skin allergies. If you want one of these breeds, you need to take into account the time and money which may need to be spent keeping them well.

It can be helpful to go to dog show and look at the breeds. Speak to owners and breeders of breeds which you like.

While choosing a puppy, look for the bright eyed, confident, alert puppy that is interested in you. Avoid overly shy or timid dogs. Similarly, avoid pushy over assertive ones too.

Taking time to choose the right puppy for you and your circumstances is very beneficial, and will result in you and your dog having a great life together.

Article compliments of VetWriter.com

Most dog owners would agree that training a puppy can be both difficult and time consuming, yet highly rewarding. It is, undoubtedly, a vital part of owning a dog. By finding out how puppies learn, this makes it easier for an owner to train and teach their puppy in the most effective and time efficient way.

So how do puppies learn? Puppies, like children, learn from the results of their behavior. So, if they do something and are rewarded for it, by, for example, a treat or a pat, they notice this and are much more likely to do it again.

On the other hand, if a puppy is actually punished for bad behavior, it may not realize that you want the bad behavior to stop. As an example, if you are angry at your puppy for going to the toilet on the carpet and punish it, it may begin to associate the punishment with actually going to the toilet in front of you. If this happens, your puppy may continue to go to the toilet on the carpet, just not when you are there, or they may do it in a place which you may not initially notice.

This being the case, it is far more effective to train your puppy by using a reward-based system when they do something right, rather than punishing them when the opposite is true.

Puppies can also learn and pick things up without you being aware of it. For example, if your puppy whines and you pay it attention, it will learn that whining produces a good outcome, like a cuddle or a treat. It is paramount that you do not inadvertently rewarding behaviors that are not desirable, or your puppy will continually persist with them.

Food can be used as a very effective tool in teaching and training your puppy. A special treat, such as diced chicken or hot dog, can be used to great effect. When your puppy does something right, say, for example, “yes” and give them the treat. In this way, they will come to view the word “yes” as a marker, or indication, that they have done the right thing and may be rewarded for that.

Take sitting as an example. Teaching your puppy to sit is not very difficult. Take the treat and hold it in front of their nose to get their attention. Then, move it slightly back and above their head. At this point, your puppy will look up and follow the treat, and as this happens, their bottom should hit the ground. When it does, say “yes” and give them the treat. By doing this, they will quickly learn that they earn a treat each time they sit on the ground.

There are lots of advice books and information available which claim to help with the training of puppies. Make sure that you follow a method which employs a reward, rather than punishment, scheme. This makes it very easy and enjoyable for you puppy to learn.
